Stop 10 – American Hotel
About
Downtown Middleton Historic Walking Trail and Historic Landmark Trail Stop 10:
The American Hotel, built between 1867 and 1870, attracted diners from Madison to its infamous restaurant. This landmark was famous for its 25 cent Sunday dinners, which brought students, merchants, and many more to its tables. Local tradition also holds that the hotel served alcohol when other establishments were “dry.” After closing as a hotel, it remained in the Stricker family as a private residence and doctor’s office. At times, this building served the community as an apartment or commercial building and as another eating place, but throughout time has rightfully remained a Middleton landmark.
Status: Currently, this building houses the cozy Free House Pub, which is open to the public for dining.
