There are countless ways to experience Middleton, but some things belong on every visitor’s list.
We’ve gathered the essential things to do and see, from outdoor highlights to local dining and seasonal moments. You may not fit it all into one trip, but that’s a good reason to start planning the next one.
Get Outside
- Walk the boardwalks and trails at Pheasant Branch Conservancy. Bonus points if you make the hike up Frederick's Hill for a sweeping view of 682 acres of woods, wetlands, restored prairie and winding creek.
- Catch a sunrise at Lake Street Park.
- Spot a new bird or "lifer" at one of Middleton's more than 30 parks and trails.
- Enjoy the beauty of Lake Mendota via boat (Marshall Boats rentals).
- Try off-road biking at the Middleton Bike Park.
- Get a par at Pleasant View Golf Course (or for those less skilled at golf, just have fun and try to not hit your golf ball into the water).
- Experience the thrill of cross-country skiing at CXC Outdoor Center, where 13 km of groomed trails are waiting.
Eat + Drink
- Find out whether you like your Wisconsin Old Fashioned sweet or sour, and enjoy every sip along the way.
- Try a Wisconsin-style fish fry on a Friday night.
- Explore a drink flight at a local brewery (Hidden Cave Cidery, Capital Brewery).
- See how far you can pull a cheese curd.
- Sample three mustards at the National Mustard Museum tasting bar. Here's a list of the 2025 World-wide Mustard Competition winners for some inspiration.
- Satisfy your sweet tooth at a restaurant unique to Middleton. Hubbard Avenue Diner is famous for its pies; Chocolate Shoppe Ice Cream is a local ice cream chain with amazing flavors; and Miggy’s Bakes hosts fun events to go with its stuffed cookie cups.
Explore + Experience
- Stay overnight in a Middleton hotel and enjoy the freedom to relax and explore without watching the clock.
- Attend a seasonal festival or community event. National Mustard Day, Bockfest, Art Walk Middleton and Good Neighbor Festival are all great events to start with.
- Visit the National Mustard Museum and take a photo in the mustard cutout.
- Browse local shops and bring home something uniquely Middleton.
- Learn about Middleton history and the Rowley family at the Rowley House Museum.
- Listen to live music at one of several venues (Capital Brewery & Bier Garten, Stone Horse Green, Hidden Cave Cidery, Virtuvius).
- Experience one of Middleton's self-guided trails (Outdoor Art Trail, Historic Landmark Trail, Downtown Historic Walking Trail).
- Stop by the Middleton Visitor Center and snap a photo in front of the train wagon (often decorated for holiday seasons). Then head inside the historic train depot to browse travel materials, explore a curated look at Middleton’s railroad history and chat with the friendly Visit Middleton staff for local tips to help plan the perfect stay.
