Stop 12 – Burmeister Livery Stables

About

Downtown Middleton Historic Walking Trail and Historic Landmark Trail Stop 12:

Middleton’s first livery dates back to 1893. In 1901, Otto Burmeister took over the business, offering delivery for local merchants and farmers and transporting train passengers. The horse-drawn livery service ended in 1910 with the introduction of Middleton’s first motorized passenger bus, and the stable was removed in 1927. In 2020, the city purchased the land to transform it into a green outdoor gathering space. Stone Horse Green officially opened in October 2022, honoring its history with interactive barn lights and six heated stone horse sculptures, known as “Herd of Boulders,” which provide seating and a play area.

Status: This area is now a public green space known as Stone Horse Green, accessible daily from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m.
