Annual Roll & Stroll
August 15, 2021
MADISON, Wis. –The University of Wisconsin Carbone Cancer Center invites the community to support pancreatic cancer patients and research efforts by participating in the eighth annual Roll & Stroll.
Participants can choose from a 50K, 25K and 5K bike ride as well as a 5K run and a 2-mile “roll and stroll,” which is open to walkers, scooters, wheelchairs, skateboards and dogs. While the in-person event takes place at Capital Brewery in Middleton, there will also be an option for virtual participation. All funds raised at this year’s event will support pancreas cancer research and care initiatives at UW Carbone.
“Ten years ago, the five-year survival rate for pancreas cancer was 6%,” said Dr. Sam Lubner, oncologist, UW Carbone and associate professor at the UW School of Medicine and Public Health. “Today, the survival rate is 10%. This is research in action – improving the lives of pancreas cancer patients and those who care for them.”
Roll & Stroll will also include live music, raffles, games, food and more, with an appearance by Bucky Badger. Check-in and day-of registration begins at 8:30 a.m.
The event is chaired by Gerianne Holzman and organized by the Pancreas Cancer Task Force; a group of volunteers dedicated to raising money for pancreas cancer research while supporting patients throughout their cancer journeys.
While pancreas cancer still adversely affects many individuals across Wisconsin, the task force is committed to continually striving to increase awareness and better the odds for cancer patients, according to Jean Scherschel, Pancreas Cancer Task Force.
“This event helps so many people. It supports those with pancreas cancer, it’s a community for people like me who are caregivers of those with pancreas cancer, and it helps the amazing doctors and researchers working to end this dreadfully complex disease,” she said. “Every dollar truly helps move the needle. We hope people come out to run, walk, bike or just support the community.”
